Fitness model, actor, singer, dancer and songwriter, Barry Conrad does it all – with some help from MACROS. We get up-close with the gym junkie, who shares everything from his workout routine to the lowdown on his diet (cheat meals included) – and how he got those abs.
You’ve merged your career with fitness. What got you into fitness?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated with health and fitness. Back in my New Zealand days, around the age of 15, I started lifting weights and reading books on nutrition. It’s a genuine passion of mine.
Those abs: how did you get them?
With a lot of difficulty! Genetically, I gain muscle and size pretty easily. But for a lot of what I do (especially the acting and modeling), I need to keep a leaner frame.
[I’ve been doing Intermittent Fasting for a few years now] and try to eat mostly paleo-style: lots of protein, good fats, veggies. [I take my Nutribullet] with me when I’m on the road too. Abs really are made in the kitchen…which is the hardest part, because I’m the biggest foodie!
Your ultimate cheat meal? How do you balance this out/fit this into your MACROS?
Let’s go with the cheat meal I had last night after two days of shooting: two burgers, fries, mac & cheese, a dozen chicken wings, piece of cake and tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. I don’t play around!
I’m healthy most of the time, which helps keep my body in check and works easily with MACROS…It’s so important to not be a slave to [fitness] and food…It’s all about balance and perspective.
Walk us through your weekly workout routine.
For me, I’m in the gym 5-6 days a week. That looks like a combination of weight training, calisthenics and cardio sometimes. I like to do it in the morning, quick and intense, so that I’m set for the day.
You’ve given all of the MACROS plans a go. Which one works best for you in terms of results?
Right now, I’m trying to be on the leaner side, so the SCULPT plan is the most conducive to that. Once I’m at a place where I’m happy with my condition, I may switch to PERFORMANCE for a while. And if I need to beef up for a role, for example, I’ll hit the MUSCLE GAIN. Love that there’s something for everyone.
Your go-to meals from the MACROS menu?
Right now, my faves are Sirloin Steak with Cauliflower Rice & Dairy Free Bearnaise Dip, and Herb Encrusted Salmon with Sweet Potato Mash & Greens. But they’re all delicious!
Songs on repeat on your training playlist?
It’s been PJ Morton, Tom Misch, John Mayer and 90’s R&B lately. But it changes on the daily! Love my music.
What keeps you motivated?
The desire to keep learning, improving and move forward, really. And I want to be around as long as I can. That definitely keeps me motivated to take care of myself.
