Dad, “hubby”, and fitness addict, he says he’s an “average guy”, but we reckon his physique and health transformation is pretty epic. Meet McGovern, AKA @farmerfitjourney. We get up-close to the Bodybuilding.com $250k Challenge winner and Spartan racer to find out how he smashed his goals – and what motivated him to make a change for good.
Props to you for shedding the extra weight. What motivated you to kickstart your weight loss?
My son River and a trip to see a fertility specialist over a year ago with my wife, as we have had issues with falling pregnant to try and have a second child.
When the specialist asked me a few questions regarding my health, one was “do you exercise?” My answer was no, and her reply was that my weight could be a contributing factor to why we were having issues. That week I decided enough was enough and started my weight loss journey.
What inspired you to join the Bodybuilding.com $250k challenge last year?
I stumbled upon the previous year’s winner Glenn Lovelace’s before and after photos and it inspired me to sign up for the challenge. When I told my coach/trainer, Vince Ozlap, about it, he said if I gave it 100% commitment he believed I could win it.
How do you find the bodybuilding community? Do you enjoy training with other people or alone?
Well I’m not a bodybuilder, I’m just an average guy who has found a passion for keeping fit and healthy. I’m very lucky to have amazing support from everyone at Elite Training & Sports Medicine; it’s like my second home. I usually train with [Vince and Sam from Elite], but I do enjoy the odd session training alone.
How do you stay motivated?
By making fitness part of my daily routine, just like eating lunch or taking a shower. Every morning my alarm goes off at 4:37AM and I get up and head out for my 6KM walk. Lunch time I will get my workout in.
Talk us through your experience with the Spartan Race.
Spartan Race was a great goal for me to keep motivated after winning the transformation challenge. Having something that I could refocus on was huge to prevent slipping back into old bad habits. It’s something that I’ve fallen in love with and I’m looking forward to pushing my limits with it this year.
How has MACROS helped you meet your training goals?
MACROS has been huge in my overall health and fitness. Specially for fuelling me for performance.
My training requires me to have plenty of fuel and the MACROS meals definitely keep me fuelled for not only training but racing also. They’re super convenient too and have been a major help for keeping my weight stable.
Consistency is key and the meals keep me consistent with my nutrition.
Your top-rated MACROS meals?
I’m a big fan of the peri peri chicken and the lean beef with wasabi mayo.
What has your experience with Elite Training been like?
Vince the co-owner of [Elite] has been a long time friend. After not being in touch with him for about 8 years then bumping into him, his reaction to seeing how much I had let myself go was truly life changing. This was in the same week as the fertility specialist.
He said “tomorrow you’re coming to my gym and training. It’s time to get you back to being the fittest and healthiest version of yourself.”
Your 5 gym bag essentials?
- Definitely a MACROS meal for after training
- Plenty of [sports] supps and [my] protein shake
- My Samsung s10+ phone to film my workouts
- A pair of INOV-8 shoes
- Sachet of [bulletproof] coffee
Your hobbies outside of the exercise community?
Teaching people how to grow their own organic food through my @thelittlefoodgarden account. I’ve recently been taking my son fishing but we’re yet to catch our first fish…Haha.
What’s next on your agenda?
A break from social media and spending some much needed time with my wife and son.
