For many of us, sitting is a job prerequisite (shoutout to the lucky PTs with active jobs!). Sitting at a desk all day can take a massive toll on your body and prevent you from getting enough exercise each day. By the end of a long, tiring day, sometimes the last thing you want to do is hit the gym or go for a run.
We’ve got you covered – here are our favourite sneaky ways to be more active in the office.
GET OFF A STOP EARLIER
Walking or riding your bike to work is ideal, but if you work far away from home, try getting off a stop or two earlier and walking from there. If you drive to work, park a couple of kilometres away from the office.
DO THE OFFICE COFFEE RUN
Coffee runs may be dreaded work as an intern, but they’re a great way to get in a quick burst of movement – don’t just head to the nearest cafe, try something different (and a little further away). Take a colleague with you and make it a social affair.
TAKE REGULAR STRETCHING BREAKS
Stretch your arms, neck, chest, and back at your desk, and if possible get up and stretch your legs.
GO OUT FOR LUNCH
Eating at your desk can be tempting when it’s a busy day in the office, but eating and working at the same time isn’t great for your health. Take a walk outside during your lunch break and enjoy your MACROS in the sunshine (gotta get that vitamin D in!). Getting out of the office even for a short time will refresh you physically and mentally – so your boss will actually thank you!
Ditch the elevator and take the stairs instead – you’ll burn some calories and avoid that awkward elevator small talk at the same time!
WALK AND TALK
Having a meeting or taking a phone call? Opt for walking meetings or take your phone call outside and walk while you talk. The physical activity gets your blood pumping and may even spark some new ideas!
TAKE AN ACTIVE BATHROOM BREAK
Make your toilet breaks work for you – instead of going to the nearest bathroom, use one on a different level and stretch your legs on the way. Taking the stairs is an easy way to burn calories and strengthen your thighs.
