The sun is shining, the birds are singing and there’s no better time to take your workout outdoors than spring. While the weather is nice (but not 40 degrees plus) you can kill two birds with one stone and get some fresh air and Vit D while also working on those chiselled abs. Here are our eight favourite ways to work outdoors during spring and make the most of our beautiful Aussie climate.
Play A Sport
One of the best ways to workout outdoors is to join a sports team. Most local areas will have casual competitions running, making use of outdoor basketball courts, soccer pitches, footy fields, tennis courts and more. Once you get into the game you won’t even feel like you’re working out, and as a bonus, you’re pretty likely to meet some other fun people playing in the area and can expand your friendship circle.
Go For A Swim
Any kind of aquatic activity is perfect pretty much all through Aussie spring and summer. Having a few laps at your local pool or swimming jetty to jetty at the beach is a great way to get your heart rate up, help with endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness, as well as tone up your body.
If you’re lucky enough to live near the coast, chances are there are some great places for surfing or snorkelling you can get to pretty easily. Mix up your outdoor workouts by learning how to surf or snorkel, which are both as good for your body as they are fun for your mind.
Explore Country To Coast With A Hike
We’re incredibly lucky in Australia to be surrounded by so much natural beauty, whether you live by the coast or inland. Take the time to get out into the wilderness this spring and go for a hike, which not only makes for a great cardio workout, but can also help improve flexibility and tone your core. Don’t forget to pack your favourite MACROS meal, like our Vietnamese Chicken Noodle Salad, to stop and enjoy along the way at a picturesque picnic spot.
Join An Outdoor Workout Class
From yoga on the beach to bootcamp at the park, working out outdoors doesn’t have to be a solo exercise. Many local gyms and studios take classes outside when the weather warms up, adding another beneficial element to their workouts. Sunrise yoga on the beach sounds like a pretty great way to start the day to us, and you could even sneak in a morning swim after.
Try A Park Bench Workout
You got a bench, you got a gym. Seriously, the humble park bench can actually help you create a strong workout routine while also getting you outside. Just some of the moves you can whip out on a park bench are box jumps, step-ups, dips and bridges. Put together a half-hour set of these and you’ll be rocking solid abs and a perky butt in no time.
Ride Your Bike
Skip the morning traffic, forgo paying for parking and start your day the right way by riding your bike to work (or wherever you need to go really). Riding your bike instead of driving is not only better for the planet, but also helps you sneak some extra fitness into your day. If you live pretty far away from your job, try riding your bike locally on the weekend, whether it’s to meet friends at your local cafe or along the beach.
Work Out On The Sand
Pro tip: working out on the sand makes your body work harder, because the constantly shifting sand forces you to use additional strength in your muscles to stay stable. Use this to your benefit by working out down at the beach this spring, and soak up some surf, sun and sand at the same time. If you’re working out on hot, cold or coarse sand (e.g. sprinkled with shells and rocks) it’s best to keep your shoes on, but otherwise you can take them off and enjoy doing something a little different!
Use Park Fitness Equipment
Over the past decade, you might have noticed more and more urban fitness spots popping up in your local area. These park fitness spots are actually decked out with some pretty cool equipment and provide the perfect spot for you to take your workout to the next level. Most local government websites will have search functions where you can find out where your closest equipment-decked park fitness spot is, so you can get the gym experience totally free, and outside. Just chuck on your fave workout playlist and you’re ready to go.
